Lifting heavy weights may be in the form of objects or kids, with an improper technique can lead to the muscle pull or muscle strain especially at the back. Improper lifting technique is one of the leading causes of low back ache. Lower back or lumbar region being more mobile is more susceptible to injury while lifting heavy object. If proper lifting techniques followed one can not only prevent unwanted stress but also can improve the efficiency of lifting.
• Plan the action to be done i.e. how and where to hold the object, where to release or shift the object etc,
• Before you lift position yourself, go close to the object, stand with a wide base of support to ensure balance.
• Grasp the object safely and lift it by bending your knees. Avoid bending back make use of strong lower limb muscles to lift the object.
• Do not hold your breath while lifting as this can increase your internal pressure and can lead to hernia, slip disk etc.
• Avoid jerky movements.
• Never combine bending and twisting spine while lifting heavy weight as this can potentially increase the chances of straining your back.
• If turning is required, turn at your feet and not at your spine.
• Take short steps if object is to be moved.
• Seek help if object is too heavy or if you need to hold the object for long duration.
Ensure safety while lifting heavy objects because “prevention is better than cure”.
