It is important to learn the proper and safe techniques while using crutches to prevent the further chances of injury.Don't start stair climbing without the admission of your physical therapist. Before starting using crutches, the proper positioning is must. The crutches should be 1 to 1.5 inches below your axilla, to avoid the compression of axillary nerve. The hand grips should be in line with the hip joints and elbow should be slightly bend and keep the crutches forming a triangle with your feet, should not be too far or too close.A saying "the good go up to heaven, the bad go down to hell" can be remembered while placing the crutches for climbing and coming down stairs. The best way to climb up is by pushing the crutches on the stairs or keep the crutches at the same level you are standing, not up on the step you are trying to climb as it can trip your balance and possibilities of fall increases. Now,stabilize the crutches on the stair and lift yourself up and progress to above, followed by the crutches. While coming down, keep the crutches a step lower to you on stairs, and bring yourself down.
