In order to avoid water retention,include natural diuretics in your diet. These foods help in eliminating excess of water from the body. These are oats,barley,parsley,green tea,watermelon and tomatoes.

kate & swati are correct. Fennel seeds is excellent natural diuretics which helps reduce excess fluid in your body. You can take in any form with sabji or raw form after every meals or after heavy meals. It gives good digestion also. Avoid too salty foods, spicy foods especially in the dinner.
