Edema occurs because of damage to the lymphatic system which causes fluid retention and tissue swelling. It is usually categorized according to its severity. The WHO expert committee has divided edema into three types according to its severity. But other methods of categorizing edema do recognize 4 different stages of edema. The fourth stage is the most severe kind of edema with the lymph channels being completely blocked. As a result, the affected limbs are extremely huge and the condition is therefore also referred to as gigantic edema. It is also known as elephantiasis and it's a condition that is irreversible.

Edema is the collection of excess fluids in the various tissues in the body. The four types of edema are:
*Generalized edema: It is edema that happens all over your body. You will notice swelling, puffiness, and water retention in various body parts, including your abdomen, arms, legs, face, and feet. Other symptoms can include bloating, skin that feels tight and skin that holds an imprint or looks pitted. This type of edema can occur due to trauma, illness, pregnancy, or chemical imbalance.

*Skin edema: This edema happens mainly in the tissues and cells of the skin. You can recognize this edema by noticing that certain parts of your skin seem puffy, tight, and have fluid retention. Hives can cause this.

*Pulmonary edema: It is a very serious medical problem. This type of edema happens when there is too much fluid in the tissues that surround your lungs.

*Peripheral edema: This edema can be noticed in arms, legs, feet or ankles. It can be caused by simply getting older, by being pregnant, or from having other health conditions.
