What kinds of exercises can be done with long term injury

Hello all. I'd like to know what kinds of cardio exercises are suitable for a girl with a ligament injury. I cannot strain my left foot too much as my ankle is weak from an injury i received a year ago, so despite loving cardio workouts, I cannot take part in high-impact aerobics, I have to avoid skipping, jogging or running as it results in my ankle hurting at the end of the day.
So, what other kinds of cardio exercises can be done in which there isnt a lot of strain on your feet or ankles, but is good enough to get your body in a fat burning mode??

    Hi Jav,
Ligaments have less blood supply hence, it takes time to heal. Proper rehabilitation program depending on severity and extent of injury is must falling to which recurrence or worsening of injury can occur. It has been 1year and probably it might have healed. Before I suggest you any exercises can you just let me know some details of injury and the current status like do you have pain? ; Is their any restriction in movement? ; Do find difficulty while doing activities like walking, stair climbing etc. ? ; Have you undergone rehabilitation program etc..
To be on safer side you can start with aquatic exercises like swimming, aquatic aerobics, arm ergometery even static cycling can be done.

Hi Ravish, thanks for your reply.
I got my injury while hiking on a snowy slope. I had lost my footing on the way back and twisted my ankle. I was told it was a sprain and it would heal in a few days, only it didn't and took a month before I could stop limping. Im not sure what you mean by Proper rehabilitation program, but my doctor told me of some exercises for my foot (like pointing and flexing 5 times anytime of the day)
Currently I can walk and climb stairs normal, move it in all directions except it feels stiff, I cannot bend it backwards for long (like the position of feet in the child pose in Yoga) Sometimes during walking, or aerobics exercise my left foot starts aching, but its bearable, however it causes me to reduce the intensity level of my workout, and at the end of the exercise, I feel the need to take my shoes off and massage the left edge and ankle area. Once relaxed (usually in 1-2 min) I get back to my routine. I would opt for swimming, but unfortunately there is no nearby swimming facility for women, so I have to go to the gym for exercise.

    Hey Jav,
Rehabilitation program is a multidirectional approach which aims at bring individual back to preinjury state. I will suggest you to start with strengthening exercises for muscles surrounding the ankle joint and some of the gentle stretching exercises to increase the range of motion. You the start with low to moderate impact activities or exercises ensuring pain as the main guiding factor. In case you have aches or swelling in ankles apply ice-pack for 10-12mins and feel the difference.
