Running with breaks in between

Is running with breaks in between advisable? Kindly advise if my goal is to firstly, gain strength and stamina and secondly, to lose weight.

Thanks.

I prefer to walk at a slow to moderate pace in between my runs whenever I am tired. I have noticed that if I stop completely then it is very difficult to start running again (except when I stop to take some water for 10-20 seconds).

Infact, some of the beginner running plans ask you to alternate runs and walks (like 5 min running and 2 min walking, total 5 times).

Do not stop in between. You can slow down your pace and you can even briskly walk in between. Varun has written a good point that in the beginning you can run for 3 minutes and then walk for 2 minutes. Over a period of time, you can increase the running duration and reduce the walk frequency.

However, taking a water break after a continuous couple of kilometers is acceptable.

    Suchitra,
Intially if your focus is on building your strength, stamina and injury free running....this is what i would recommend...
    1) Skipping...
    2) Cycling...
    3) Light weight training...
Even once a week would be fine....you must be wondering why am i recommending this to you....the point all the above activities are a low impact ones on your Knees (compare to running...) and helps you to build your endurance and strengthens your legs that is very crutial for Running.

    Hey Suchitra,
Running in break is not advisable. As Varun said, you can walk or jog in between when you are tired and again slowly increasing the speed you can run till its comfortable.
