Out of various physiological changes occurring with the onset of exercises the respiratory changes are very prominent and important as well. Respiratory response is directly related to the type of exercises i.e. isotonic or isometric, intensity of exercises and volume of exercises. Our lungs are like elastic balloon, more you breathe in more it gets expanded. It is but obvious that with the onset of exercises there is increase in oxygen demand which leads to increase in rate and depth of respiration. Thus, there is increase in inspiratory area. These changes are not brought by solely responsible factor but by multiple factors like:
* Direct effect of increased CO2, produced by the working muscles, on the respiratory centre,
* Indirect effect of metabolites on respiratory centre through chemo receptors,
* Proprioceptive impulse from the joints of the extremities,
* Increase in temperature causing rise of breathing by direct stimulation of respiratory centre, stimulation of cortical centre or carotid and aortic bodies, and other reflex pathways.
