Well if the potassium levels in a person are high, the best way out is to know the reason behind these elevated levels and treat it. The potassium levels can be high in condition like:
- Acute and chronic renal failure
- Glomerulonephritis
- Lupus nephritis
- Transplant rejection
- Obstructive disease of the urinary tract such as Urolithiasos (due to stones)
Once the condition is treated, the potassium levels come back to normal.
Reducing the potassium intake in food is a little hard as every food contains some or other amount of potassium in them. But, with a special process called leaching, we can reduce the potassium levels in the food.
- By sieving the wheat flour 2-3 times before use, (bran contains more potassium). You'll have to choose more of refined foods.
- By cutting the vegetables finely and then soaking them in boiled water for 10 min and discarding the water (then cooking the vegetable).
- Avoid foods which are extremely high in potassium, like apricots, banana, raisins, oranges, potatoes, spinach, tomatoes , sqaush, curd, other green leafy veggies, dry fruits , coconut water.
You can only control your potassium levels by restricting these items and using the above mentioned techniques. There is no food item which will help you in reducing the potassium from body. For this purpose, doctors generally prescribe special diuretics, or other medications.
To increase the HB levels in a diabetic, you would have to consume more of iron and protein rich products like green leafy vegetables, organ meats, beetroot, peanuts , almonds etc.
Caution:
You have not mentioned if both these problems are faced by the same individual. If this is so please refer to a dietician (in person) before making these changes as a lot of other factors need to be considered, like the function of kidney , the blood urea level, the current potassium levels, and the blood sugar levels in the last 2 months.
