A high amount of sodium in your body can be very harmful for your body. Sodium as you know controls the fluid balance and the volume of the blood and blood pressure. If there is a high intake of sodium, it will lead to an imbalance in the body, resulting in the rise in blood pressure and also the retention of fluids in the body. This is seen in the swelling of legs and feet and the collection of water around the lungs that would lead to difficulties in breathing. Today most of us take more sodium than our body needs. Do not consume any food that has excessive amounts of salt in them.

Some of the guidelines for sodium include:
*Use fresh ingredients and/or foods with no salt added.
*Try orange or pineapple juice as a base for meat marinades.
*Avoid convenience foods such as canned soups, entrees, vegetables, pasta and rice mixes, frozen dinners, instant cereal and puddings, and gravy sauce mixes.
*Select frozen entrees that contain 600 mg or less of sodium. However, limit to one of these frozen entrees per day. Check the Nutrition Facts label on the package for sodium content.
*Use fresh, frozen, no added salt canned vegetables, or canned vegetables that have been rinsed before they are prepared.
*Low sodium canned soups may be used.
*Avoid mixed seasonings and spice blends that include salt, such as garlic salt.
*Choose ready-to-eat breakfast cereals that are lower in sodium
*Use fresh poultry, fish, and lean meat, rather than canned, smoked, or processed types.
*Cook rice, pasta, and hot cereals without salt.
*Limit condiments, such as mustard, ketchup, pickles, and sauces.
*Try to avoid table salt for fruits & salads.
*Don't use a salt substitute unless you check with your doctor first.
