Antioxidants are primarily are substances or nutrients in our foods which can prevent or slow the oxidative damage to our body. When our cells consume oxygen they produce free radicals which cause damage to the cells. These antioxidant's act as free radical scavengers and prevent any damage to these cells. There are different types of antioxidants which are present in different types of foods. The different types of antioxidants are vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, Selenium, Beta-carotene, Lycopene, Lutein, Lignan, etc. As you know there are certain foods that have more vitamin C or vitamin A. This is told to us when we have certain deficiencies.
