The total amount of vitamin B12 in the body is around two to five mg and if the count becomes lesser than this it can become an issue. Deficiency in vitamin B12 will occur usually in vegan children who do not eat any animal products. This deficiency will not occur if you are a regular meat and egg eater. The removal of the small bowel surgically can also cause this deficiency. This can happen in people who have the Crohn's disease. Forms of achlohydria can also cause this deficiency. This usually happens due to mal absorption and malnutrition. Hope that helps!

Vitamin B12 deficiency is caused by lack of folate & vitamin B12 intake , low absorption of vitamin B12, increase loss of vitamin B12 or blood. Vitamin B12 is also caused by insufficient stomach acid.
