Chemotherapy is the use of chemical agents or medications to treat cancer. Whereas surgery and radiation therapy are used to treat localized tumors, chemotherapy is a systemic therapy that affects the whole body. The target of action of this therapy is not liited to malignant tissue, it affects normal cells as well. Commonly experienced side effects are anemia, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, mucositis, change in taste and smell, dysphagia and change in bowel function. As a result, dietary intake and nutrition status can be adversely affected. The main line of treatment should be to maintain adequate calories for proper maintence of weight and maximize the protein to prevent tissue loss and enhance the immunity system. Few tips which will help to overcome the side effects of chemotherapy are ;* Eat less and more often- Nausea and poor appetite may prevent you for eating in large quantities, so divide your entire meal to small and frequent meals. * High calorie foods; Make sure to have food rich in carbohydrate and protein.* Ensure to have well cooked food and properly heated foods.* Cleanliness is the key to prevent infection- After chemotherapy body's defenses against infection is very low. so try to maintain cleanliness at every point.
