Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by condition where there is abnormal high blood sugar levels i.e. hyperglycemia and presence of sugar in the urine i.e. glycosuria. It develops when there is inadequate production of insulin by the pancreas or an inability of insulin to facilitate the transport of glucose into the cell or both. Diabetes mellitus has been classified into two major categories; type I and type II. Majority of cases suffer from type II diabetes.
Type I diabetes also known as insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, is caused due to absolute deficiency of insulin secretion. Here there is inability of the pancreas to produce sufficient insulin as a result of failure of the beta cells in the pancreas. The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown. Some physiologist believes that in most people with type 1 diabetes, their body's own immune system starts destroying the beta cells in the pancreas. Exposure to certain viruses and genetic predisposition is supposed to play important role. Some of the common symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, extreme hunger, sudden vision changes, tingling and numbness in hand and feet, feeling of tiredness, delayed healing of sores and wounds etc. Diabetes is often associated with high risk for coronary artery disease, hypertension, kidney disease, stroke etc.

Type I Diabetes takes place as a result of insufficient production of insulin in the body.Insulin is a hormone produced by Islets cells of Langerhams in the pancreas, that helps to maintain and regulate blood sugar levels. When this hormone is produced in inadequate amounts in the body then the blood sugar levels increases leading to diabetes.Type I diabetes mostly takes place during childhood and is also known as juvenile diabetes. It is a kind of genetic disorder and the child is usually born with a deficiency of insulin hormone. In such condition the child has to depend externally on artificial insulin to meet its requirements. The child is given external doses of insulin intravenously. The diet is also monitored in terms of carbohydrates. It should be kept low in simple sugars and high in complex carbohydrates and fibers.

Type I diabetes or Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), previously known as juvenile-onset diabetes, is believed to be an inherited autoimmune disease. The immune response is thought to be triggered by an environmental condition such as a viral infection or chemical agent. Type I diabetes is characterized by an eventual absence of endogenous insulin production. Type I diabetes occurs commonly in childhood and adolescence. However, it can be recognized and become symptomatic at any age. The individuals with Type I diabetes experiences wide swings in blood glucose levels.
