Diet for Diabetic Patient

Hi Everyone,

I find very well established dietitians on this forum. I request them to please answer my query.

My mother 50 years old with around 45 weight is suffering from Diabetes( from past 8-10 years) and takes insulin shots from past 3 years. her blood sugar levels are 120 fasting and 180 after breakfast on an average.

Her health is deteriorating, now she has got cataract in both her eyes.

Could you guys please suggest me some VEGETARIAN DIET PLAN FOR DIABETIC.

It would be great if one could tell available options for breakfast, lunch, dinner and mid time snacks.

can she have sprouts like moth, whole moong, Black Eye Beans, black grams, green grams and all.

    Hi Gunjan,

Looking at the info given by you, i can see that your mother's weight seems to be slightly less and her blood sugar levels may also be effecting it.. So try n make sure she increases another 4 - 5 kilos with healthy eating and normal workout like walking or yoga exercises. Below i have attached you a link for 1200 Calorie North Indian Diet Plan for Diabetes. This would give you a rough idea on managing the time and dividing the total calorie intake..

    Here are some more tips:
    * Include herbs and foods like karela (bitter melon) (karela juice can be consumed as it has plant insulin), methi seed sprouts, neem, jamun fruit etc, which would help in improving the insulin response.
    * Include high fibre foods like whole grains, whole breads, wheat bran, veggies and fruits with skin.
    * Include low glycemic food like black channa, legumes, butter milk, turmeric and amla.
    * Soyabeans have little amount of starch but high amounts of fiber and protein which exerts a valuable effect in lowering urinary excretion of sugar in people suffering from diabetes.
    * Use a judicious mix of poly-unsaturated oils like safflower/corn and mono-unsaturated oils like olive oil/rice bran oil while cooking.
