Your heart automatically jumps when you exercise. The speed and intensity of the exercise also plays an important part in determining your heart rate. If you want to monitor your heart rate then you can get a digital heart rate monitor that you can wear on your wrist. This will help you keep track of the number of beats per second. Also most modern treadmills have a heart rate monitor attached. Exercises that push you to the limit will make your heart rate jump. You can also measure the recovery heart rate as you finish your exercise. It is also an indicator of fitness levels.

Hey Nancy...... While you exercises, its the obvious response of your body to increase heart rate as heart need to pump more blood to satisfy the need of working muscles. so just dont worry of increasing heart rate. Its a simple rule that heart rate is directly proportional to exercise intensity. More intense is your workout, more your heart rate would be.
